The City of West Palm Beach and the National Weather Service
Recognize National Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 5 - 11, 2024

WEST PALM BEACH, FL – As hurricane season approaches, the City of West Palm Beach is joining with the National Weather Service (NWS) in its commitment to ensuring the safety and preparedness of everyone. National Hurricane Preparedness Week, observed from Sunday, May 5 to Saturday, May 11, serves as a crucial reminder for individuals and communities to take proactive measures in readiness for potential storms.

Throughout the week, the City of West Palm Beach and the NWS will be focusing on daily themes to guide residents in their preparations:

  • May 5, 2024 — Know Your Risk: Wind & Water: Understanding the potential risks specific to your area is the first step in hurricane preparedness. Residents are urged to identify if they live in flood-prone zones or evacuation areas and assess any structural vulnerabilities in their homes.
  • May 6, 2024 — Prepare Before Hurricane Season: Early preparation is key to minimizing the impact of hurricanes. Residents are encouraged to stock up on essential supplies and review insurance policies well in advance of the season, as flood insurance typically requires a 30-day waiting period.
  • May 7, 2024 — Understand Forecast Information: It's crucial to understand the information provided in hurricane forecasts, including projected paths, rainfall estimates, and wind speeds. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and aware of impending weather conditions.
  • May 8, 2024 — Get Moving When a Storm Threatens: Knowing what actions to take when storms approach can save lives. Residents are advised to familiarize themselves with evacuation routes and emergency procedures well ahead of time.
  • May 9, 2024 — Stay Protected During Storms: During a hurricane, staying safe requires vigilance and awareness. Residents should remain informed of updates from local officials and be prepared to take necessary precautions, whether sheltering in place or evacuating.
  • May 10, 2024 — Use Caution After Storms: The dangers posed by hurricanes extend beyond the storm's duration. Residents are reminded to exercise caution in the aftermath of a hurricane, as hazards such as flooding, and debris may persist.
  • May 11, 2024 — Take Action Today: Preparedness is an ongoing effort, and there's no better time to start than now. Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps to enhance their readiness for hurricane season, including reviewing emergency plans and making any necessary preparations.

Mayor Keith A. James emphasizes the importance of collective action in ensuring the community's resilience in the face of natural disasters. "National Hurricane Preparedness Week serves as a reminder that preparedness is everyone's responsibility. By taking proactive measures and staying informed, we can protect our families, homes, and community during hurricane season."
