Background 

The City of West Palm Beach and Florida A &M University has established a new partnership through its Cooperative Extension Program to provide educational programs and activities to City of West Palm Beach residents, including:

  • 4H Development Programs
  • Family consumer science nutrition, financial literacy, senior living & aging, emergency preparedness & safety
  • Community Gardening

In addition to programs, FAMU will be overseeing three community gardens that will serve residents in our north and south communities.


Opportunities

NEXTGEN Scholarship Program

The FAMU Insect Science/Entomology program in the College of Agriculture + Food Sciences is offering NEXTGEN Scholarships/Assistantships up to $37,000 for tuition plus housing costs and travels.

There are four (4) types of scholarships: The Gold NEXTGEN Scholarship (full ride), the Premier NEXTGEN Scholarship (full/ partial ride), the Silver NEXTGEN Scholarship (full/partial ride), and the College Transfer NEXTGEN Scholarship (full/partial ride).

These Scholarships range from $5,000 to $37,000 per year. These competitive scholarships may be applied only to tuition and associated fees, and/or room and board, paid internships, professional travels, and/or books and educational supplies for the semester of the award (amount associated with GPA) and are as follows:

General Eligibility: To be eligible for the NEXTGEN Scholarship Program, a student must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Have earned a standard U.S. high school diploma or its equivalency
  • Have at least a 3.00 recalculated (by FAMU Admissions) Core Academic Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.00 scale for high school graduates or a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for college students
  • Have a score of 1,080 or higher on the SAT; or a composite score of 21 or higher on the ACT (for incoming FTICs only)
  • Have been accepted for admission by FAMU as a high school graduate, entering as first-time-in-college freshman, or be a current college or transfer student attending university or state college
  • Must enroll in Insect Science/Entomology in the College of Agriculture and Food Sciences, with the intention of pursuing a career in the food and agricultural sciences
  • Must fully participate in NEXTGEN annual internships

   Garden Days 

Garden Days are canceled at both the Coleman Park and Pleasant City Community Gardens until late August.

In the meantime, if your group is interesting in a gardening workshop or obtaining volunteer hours, please contact Tavia Gordon, Urban Agriculture Extension Agent, at tavia.gordon@famu.edu to schedule a visit.

Pleasant City Community Garden Open

The City of West Palm Beach and Florida A & M University opened the new Pleasant City Community Garden on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at 2147 Spruce Avenue. Laid out in a specific pattern, the gardening stations have irrigation laid out just waiting for residents to begin growing vegetables.
