Shelters

If you are living in a mandatory evacuation zone or you feel your house won't be safe during a storm, you should plan on going to your nearest local storm shelter. Storm shelters are intended to be short- term protection during the the storm itself and only offer the most basic of amenities.

  • Bring what you will need for your stay at the shelter. Portable chairs, food, blankets, prescription medicine, cards and board games. Do not expect the shelters to provide food.
  • Bring face masks and hand sanitizers, since social distancing may be difficult in the shelter.
  • Plan on arriving shortly after the shelter opens. Conditions will begin to worsen as the storm approaches and travel can be very dangerous.
  • Pets are not allowed in most shelters. Palm Beach County has only one pet-friendly shelter at this time. The shelter is located in Lake Worth at the West Boynton Recreation Center gymnasium, 6000 Northtree Boulevard, Lake Worth. Pet friendly shelter details are here. The shelter requires pre-registration and here is the map for the pet-friendly shelter. Pet owners must also sign a pet waiver form to use the pet-friendly shelter.
