WEST PALM BEACH, FLA (May 2, 2022) -- Have you been admiring an improvement made to a neighbor’s historic property? Do you wish to honor a historic preservation success story? Now is your chance! To celebrate National Historic Preservation Month in May, the City of West Palm Beach Historic Preservation Division would like to recognize exceptional preservation efforts in our community through the annual Historic Preservation Awards.
Members of the public are invited to nominate a worthy project or person dedicated to preservation in the City of West Palm Beach by submitting completed nomination forms for projects meeting the minimum criteria to the city’s Historic Preservation Division no later than Friday, May 13, 2022.
Nominations will be accepted for the following categories:
- Rehabilitation -- Acknowledges the proper rehabilitation of a structure according to Secretary of Interior standards. Project may include additions, interior renovations, or exterior improvements that respect the historic integrity of the structure.
- Infill Design -- Acknowledges appropriate infill within historic districts that essentially “fills in the gap” of a historic streetscape. Infill should be compatible in massing, size, scale, and architectural features with the district.
- Craftsmanship/ “Handyman” -- Recognizes a traditional technique or method of construction that is considered artistic and rare in today’s practices. This may include intricate woodworking, hand-turned wrought-iron work, or hand-carving of architectural elements. The category is also suited to recognize the “handyman” who has appropriately repaired distinguishing features of a structure (i.e. wood, windows, doors, etc.).
- Service -- Recognizes an organization or individual who has clearly made an impact on the community through advocacy or service in historic preservation.
All awards will be based on the quality, significance and uniqueness of the project.
Minimum eligibility criteria includes the following:
- Property must be within the boundaries of a designated historic district or listed on the City of West Palm Beach Register of Historic Places.
- Project must have been completed within the last five years.
The Historic Preservation Board Members will act as the judging panel. The winners will be announced at the board’s May 24, 2022 meeting.
