City of West Palm Beach to Observe Haitian Heritage Month
WEST PALM BEACH, FLA (May 5, 2021) — The City of West Palm Beach will observe Haitian Heritage Month in May, a month that includes the celebration of Haitian Flag Day on May 18th. Haitian Heritage Month celebrates the history, culture, language and contributions of Haitians to the history of the world. At a meeting of the City Commission on May 17, 2021, West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James will acknowledge Haitian Heritage Month by issuing a proclamation from the City of West Palm Beach.
The City of West Pam Beach will observe the month with FREE events hosted by the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach. The events celebrate the culture, heritage, history, and contributions of Haitians in America.
- Haitian Potpourri: A Music and Dance Performance

Selebre Mwa Eritaj Ayisyen! Celebrate Haitian Heritage Month with drums, folk dances, and traditional songs. Tradisyon Lakou Lakay (meaning "hometown traditions") is a Haitian performing arts organization dedicated to educating, uplifting, and helping people discover hidden talents. Their dance ensemble will perform live via Zoom from the stage at Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami. This ensemble will be accompanied by drummers and has opened shows for Wyclef Jean, Tabou Combo, and others. To view the performance in the library auditorium, registration is required and limited to 17 people. Light refreshments from local Haitian restaurant Flavors Island will be served to-go. - “The Sweetest Girl”: Haitian-American Short Film Screening and Panel Discussion

Yanatha Desouvre is a local author, filmmaker, and college professor. His latest novella, “Revelations: Roads to Redemption,” has been partially adapted as a short film, “The Sweetest Girl.” Inspired by true events, this 23-minute film features a provocative love story, set in Haiti, haunted by gun violence and human trafficking. Following the virtual screening, a panel of cast and crew will discuss the relevance of the story to South Florida as well as what it was like to film during the height of the pandemic. Registration and an active email address are required. Registrants will receive a Zoom link by email upon registration. Mayor James has established the West Palm Beach Mayor’s Task Force on Racial and Ethnic Equality to identify and help address issues of racial/ethnic equity through education about racial and ethnic inequities, research of best practices, and issuance of policy/funding recommendations to address racial/ethnic inequity in the City of West Palm Beach.
