WEST PALM BEACH, FLA (April 12, 2021) – The City of West Palm Beach’s Warren Hawkins Aquatic Center at Gaines Park, located at 1501 N. Australian Avenue, was chosen by the USA Swimming Foundation to receive a $5000 grant in 2021. Funds will support the city’s continued efforts to provide free or reduced-cost swim lessons. The city was one of just 67 swim lesson providers in the nation that were awarded a grant by the USA Swimming Foundation this year.
The Warren Hawkins Aquatic Center provides hundreds of children and adults the lifesaving gift of adequate swimming education each year. This service is especially critical as drowning remains the second leading cause of injury related death for children between the ages of 1-12, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“I express my sincerest gratitude to the USA Swimming Foundation for choosing our aquatic center as one of the beneficiaries of this generous grant,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James. “Proper swimming skills are so vital here in South Florida, and these funds will help our staff work with low-income families so that they have the same access to these potentially life-saving skills as others.”
The Warren Hawkins Aquatic Center is an 8-lane, 25-meter facility with two deep water slides, a wading pool, and a splash pad that is accessible from the pool deck and the park. The facility provides shaded areas and places for families to gather and take a break from their swimming. The facility is fully accessible and offers programming for all ages and abilities. Programs include:
- Summer Learn to Swim,
- Open Swimming & Lap Swimming
- Water Fitness,
- Water Safety Instructor, and
- Lifeguard Instructor and Instructor Re-entry.
