Antoinette’s Pick Winter Soldier Vol. 1: The Longest Winter by Butch Guice and Ed Brubaker
The graphic novel is an amazing start if you want to see the adventures of Bucky Barnes post Winter Soldier and his team ups with the Black Widow and other heroes. It is a heavy series, but it’s an exciting tale and seeing what all he and Black Widow can do.
the third and final installment of the Stillwater series. Imagine if the residents in a small town have lived for decades looking exactly the same. No one ages, and everyone heals from their injuries in record time. What would a society look like, how do you keep sane knowing nothing can't kill you? This series was an interesting read, the characters were well thought out and the ending was a bit of a surprise!
This kid-friendly retelling of Beowulf is clever and quirky and deliciously dark. Written in rhyme with fantastic illustrations, this middle-grade graphic novel still has appeal us adults as well. I honestly liked this book more than the original. Don't just take my word for it; Neil Gaiman and Lemony Snicket loved it too!
A fun commentary on traditional mystery solving, told from the point of view of a man who teaches others to write mystery novels. Everyone who has ever been on a family get together will relate to Ernie, who is doing his best at navigating his delicate family life. Funny and somewhat dark-- everyone in this family has killed someone, after all.
It was at Mandel Public Library’s BAM Festival where I was able to purchase a signed copy of Scythe and I’m so glad I did! It’s an excellent book geared toward YA or new adults, but as a person in the middle of their life I still found this book to be an engaging read. In a world that has long since surpassed mortality, the Scythedom is tasked with “gleaning” people to ensure their world stays as idyllic as possible. Citra and Rowan are pleased to be selected by Honorable Scythe Faraday to be scythe apprentices. Though the profession is considered honorable, Citra and Rowan are morally at odds with the position. I was captivated until the end and the book concludes with a cliffhanger so you may just want to go ahead and get the sequel Thunderhead while you’re at it.
This is the first in a three-book series and is an intricately woven story set in the 1800's in a slightly different world where there are still dragons. I listened to the audiobook which really helped me to fall into the story.
