WEST PALM BEACH, FL (August 28, 2020) – In honor of Red Alert Day, an initiative that supports economic relief for the live events industry, the City of West Palm Beach will be “going red.” Red Alert Day will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the City will turn the interior lights of the Lake Pavilion to red as well as uplighting the  Meyer Amphitheatre canopy in this same color.

This social media movement was created as a call to action to implore Congress to pass the RESTART Act, which would provide much-needed economic relief to the industry, which has faced significant challenges since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, cities throughout the country, even globally, have experienced prolonged economic declines. The Kravis Center alone, one of the many affected organizations, has served as an economic catalyst for West Palm Beach, having contributed about $750 million in just under 30 years to our local economy.

“For generations, the live events industry has created moments of joy, culture and entertainment,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James. “Red Alert Day is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge these workers for the unforgettable moments they helped create. The City of West Palm Beach is proud to stand behind such an important initiative.”

More than 1,500 buildings across North America will also go red to raise public awareness about the initiative. Locally, the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, the Breakers Resort, the Flagler Museum, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach County Convention Center, Palm Beach Drama Works and Rosemary Square will also be joining the movement.

As part of its COVID-19 relief and recovery efforts, the City has provided several short-term loans to local businesses. Among the recipients are a few organizations in the live events industry.
