A fight at a gathering turned deadly when a man threatening the crowd with a rifle was shot and killed by another man.
At 10:42 p.m. August 7, West Palm Beach police received a ShotSpotter gunfire detection alert in the 800 block of 4 Street. Officers were immediately dispatched and simultaneously, a 911 call was received saying someone was shot. The 911 caller stated he shot the man who retrieved a short-barreled rifle from a car and threatened to “shoot the crowd up.” Detectives have determined the fight between two women escalated into a brawl of about 20 people, and the gunman who was shot, a 22-year-old from West Palm Beach, name withheld (Marsy’s Law), failed to drop the rifle when repeatedly confronted by a number of people, including a 32-year-old West Palm Beach man, The 32-year-old man, name withheld (Marsy’s Law), has a Florida Concealed Weapon License, and fired his weapon, striking the armed suspect. The 32-year-old man remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
The 22-year-old suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. Detectives are treating this as an isolated incident and are not seeking any other suspects, nor is there any threat to the community however, the investigation is ongoing. The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. No charges are pending at this time.
