Dan Losey was appointed by DOJ to supervise External Force Investigation Team

West Palm Beach, FLA (July 15, 2021) – The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has appointed Dan Losey, legal advisor for the West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD), to supervise one of the DOJ’s External Force Investigation Teams (EFIT).

Comprised of legal and law enforcement experts, an EFIT works alongside Internal Affairs investigators in law enforcement agencies facing recurrent, excessive use of force complaints. The EFIT guides, educates and directs law enforcement agencies and, when necessary, conducts investigations of use of force.

Mr.  Losey will continue in his current role as WPBPD’s legal advisor and serve the DOJ on a case-by-case basis.

“In Dan Losey, the West Palm Beach Police Department has on its team one of the leading experts in the nation in use of force,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James. “For a member of the department to have been appointed to an EFIT team shows that the City of West Palm Beach is committed to policing our community in a safe, accountable manner. I congratulate Mr. Losey and am pleased his expertise can help other law enforcement agencies and the people they serve.”

“I am proud of Dan’s prestigious appointment, which clearly recognizes that he is a valuable member of our department,” said Chief Frank Adderley. “It has been incredible to witness the many accomplishments Dan has achieved. I know his valuable skills will help the DOJ in their mission to bring accountability and transparency to police departments throughout the Unites States.”

Mr. Losey has more than 40 years of experience as an officer and legal advisor to law enforcement agencies. He began his career as a narcotics officer in the City of Fort Lauderdale in 1979. He was employed by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of the State Attorney, before joining WPBPD in 2019.
