Below is a summary of some of the approvals and decisions made by the City Commission during a meeting on Monday, March 9, 2020. • Approved a five-year Economic Development Plan intended to be a guiding document to help develop programs, policies and funding priorities through FY23/24.
• Approved the design features for proposed streetscape improvements to Clematis Street. The 400 and 500 blocks, from Dixie Highway to Sapodilla Avenue, are targeted for streetscape improvements.
• Approved a donation of $3,039 from parking meters from the Martin Luther King Day Holiday, January 20, 2020 to the Martin Luther King Caregivers. The Martin Luther King Caregivers are volunteers who have been providing assistance to the frail, elderly and homebound in the inner City of West Palm Beach since 1996.
• Approved an agreement between the City and the CRA, DDA, and CityPlace Retail, LLC to appropriate funding for an additional Police Lieutenant for the Downtown Entertainment District, totaling $210,000 in contribution. In an attempt to increase police services in the Downtown Entertainment District and in order to keep pace with the changing population, both residential and visiting, the CRA, DDA and CityPlace have all agreed to share funding for the early deployment of a dedicated Lieutenant to supervise the district operations and provide additional oversight.
• Approved pet health insurance for eligible City K-9 Police Officers from HealthyPaws, a measure recommended by the veterinarian to the City's K-9s. Based on the Police Department's recent experience with a K-9 illness and surgery related to that illness, having health insurance coverage proved to be cost effective, and securing health insurance for other eligible K-9s will save the City considerable. Four (4) of the City's eight (8) K-9s will qualify for health insurance coverage at a rate of $213.14 per month.
