WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (August 20, 2020) – West Palm Beach residents can now access free, digital home water use reports by mobile app (iOS, Android) and/or by internet. The reports can help residential water customers save both water and money. The City of West Palm Beach Department of Public Utilities has partnered with Dropcountr to provide water utilities customers with a customized household water use profile, information about a customer’s past water use, suggestions for how to save water, information about the City’s conservation programs, and utility/leak/service alerts. Residential customers may also use Dropcountr to set goals for water conservation.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

HOW MUCH WATER CAN I SAVE?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program, 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more of water each day. Using Dropcountr could help save an average household thousands of gallons of water annually. Water waste may include leaking toilets, faucets, pool, or broken or improperly set irrigation systems.

WHAT OTHER WPB WATER CONSERVATION PROGRAMS EXIST?

  • Free rain barrels – Rain barrels can help you conserve water, save money, and reduce stormwater runoff. The City holds regular FREE rain barrel workshops and giveaways for West Palm Beach water customers.

WATER SAVING TIPS

Conserving water is as easy as making small changes to your everyday routine. Here are some tips to help get you started!

  • Shorten your shower. A one- or two-minute reduction can save up to 700 gallons of water each month. If possible, take a shallow bath instead of a shower for even greater water savings.
  • Replace your shower head with low-flow shower heads or install flow restrictors.
  • Put trash in the wastebasket — don’t flush! Each time you flush a small bit of trash you waste up to five to seven gallons of water.
  • Check for leaks in your toilets. Drop a dye tablet in your toilet tank or add a few drops of food coloring and let stand for at least three hours. If the color begins to appear in the bowl without flushing, your toilet has a leak and could be wasting thousands of gallons of water each year. Repair those leaks!
  • When brushing your teeth, wet your toothbrush, then turn off the water.
  • Rinse your razor in a partially filled sink instead of under a running tap.
  • Keep a bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking. Don’t run the tap waiting for cold water.
  • Rinse vegetables in a pan of water — not under a running tap.
  • Use your dishwasher and washing machine for full loads only.
  • Water your lawn in the early morning based upon current water restrictions when there is less evaporation.
  • Plant drought-resistant native trees and plants. There are many beautiful plants and trees that thrive on small amounts of water.
  • Place a layer of mulch around trees and plants. Mulch slows evaporation of moisture and discourages weed growth.
